Delores stood fuming in her bedroom as she browsed her closet. So many clothes, so many colors. If there was one thing Delores loved more than her cakes and soda, and her garden, it was clothes. Her father used to reward her special behavior with pretty clothes. Delores never seemed to shake that habit. Whenever she deemed herself doing a good deed, she bought something pretty and new. She never went anywhere fancy, had never been on a cruise or to a formal affair, yet she had enough clothes to wear to a year’s worth of Broadway shows and black-tie affairs. She made excuses for it over and over as to why she wouldn’t travel with Dirk, other than she hated him, of course. She couldn’t stand the thought of someone in the neighborhood doing something without her verbal and written consent.

Why, the very thought of it pissed her off. Who knows what the Thompsons could get up to in ten days unsupervised? Or what about the Kinneys down the street? Those boneheads might paint their house purple while she was away. And those hipsters in the back? She shuddered, Beckett and Karlie Pastorelli, well, they just might start growing those marijuana plants in their backyard and put black patio furniture on their front porch. Delores might as well start allowing those colored folks to move in.

She can’t allow that. It would be chaos, utter chaos, without her guidance and wisdom. She knew better than all of them did, and none of them dared to argue with her. She was responsible for keeping their property values up, the riffraff out, and the community spinning on a nicely balanced axle. An axle that she just happened to control.

Delores spied a silky leopard print shift dress that she loved and snagged it from the closet. It was trimmed in black satin around the hem and the sleeves, and the jersey fabric was comfortable without clinging to her rolls too much. She set it on the bed and selected her chunky black mules to go with it. She couldn’t have Irina telling the neighbors that she had come to dinner in her gardening clothes. Satisfied, she trudged over to her dresser and began fumbling with make-up and hair products. She could hardly wait to see Irina’s yard, finally.
